Tamayo has served as a site representative and is currently president of the El Rancho Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 3467, in Pico Rivera.

Phillips leads the Berkeley Council of Classified Employees, AFT Local 6192, representing staff in the Berkeley Unified School District, where she worked as an administrative assistant to the Personnel Commission.
