Recognizing his support for public education, CFT has endorsed Gov. Jerry Brown for reelection in 2014. Brown, as the state’s chief executive, worked closely with CFT to pass Prop. 30, raising additional revenue for schools, and then helped shape a historic funding bill that recognizes that students from low-income families, and students who speak little English, need additional resources in order to excel.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson has also won CFT support in another race with particular importance to educators. Torlakson has established a strong record of promoting public education. He is committed to expanding early childhood education as way to increase student success. Torlakson has also demonstrated a particular interest in career and technical education.
In other races, CFT endorsed the reelection of Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, Attorney General Kamala Harris, and Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones. In three races without an incumbent, CFT supports State Controller John Chiang for State Treasurer and Board of Equalization member Betty Yee for State Controller.
Voters face a choice in the competitive races for the secretary of state and controller. Yee is highly qualified to serve as state controller, having done an admirable job on the State Board of Equalization. Derek Cressman will make sure that every vote counts as secretary of state. He is a good government reformer who spent many years leading Common Cause.
