Throughout the state, CFT members are responding to the governor's unfortunate plan to solve the state's $17 billion budget deficit with cuts, borrowing, and a regressive sales tax. Educators are also rallying against the irresponsible refusal by legislative Republicans to consider any tax increase at all. In a state where education funding is 46th in the country, more cuts are not acceptable. We must instead increase state revenues, that is, increase taxes, by asking the people who can best afford to do so to help. Assembly Democrats have such a progressive tax in their budget proposal. Republican governor Pete Wilson accepted this necessity in a similar fiscal crisis fifteen years ago. On this page you will find information about what CFT is doing to organize locally, in coalition with other groups, and through legislative advocacy to put public education on a more solid footing.
