Although there are many important races, Voting NO on Prop 22 is one of the most important decisions you can make on the ballot this year. Here’s why:
- Uber, Lyft and other giant gig corporations have spent $200 million on Prop 22 in an effort to exempt themselves from all labor laws that protect workers. We’re talking about basic protections like a minimum wage, sick leave, workers’ comp and unemployment insurance. These multi-billion dollar corporations are trying to strip workers of virtually every right we’ve fought decades to enact.
- If Uber and Lyft simply followed current law, they could pay their drivers a fair wage and offer benefits like health insurance without changing anything about the flexibility of app workers. Nothing in current law prevents Uber and Lyft from providing the exact same flexibility as they do now.
-
Prop 22 was written by app company executives FOR app
company executives. These corporations don’t care
about their workers; if they did, they wouldn’t be paying them
as little as $4 an hour.
-
Not only is Prop 22 bad for workers, it cheats
taxpayers. The measure gives multi-billion dollar
companies like Uber and Lyft a permanent exemption from
contributing to programs we all need like Social Security,
Medicare and Unemployment Insurance. As a result, taxpayers and
small businesses are forced to shoulder the burden.
- Prop 22 is undemocratic. It requires 7/8 of the California Legislature to pass any future amendments. That’s an unprecedented hurdle that would make this harmful law essentially permanent.
We need all California voters to get the facts on Prop 22 and see the measure for what it is — a scam that harms working people and our families.
