SACRAMENTO, CA – CFT President Jeff Freitas released the following statement on Governor Newsom’s May Revise budget proposal released today: 

“In California’s history, when the state faces dramatic deficits, funding for education is often the first to go. CFT opposes any reduction of public education funding, and the Governor’s May budget revision proposes no new cuts to core education funding from his January budget proposal. 

“Once again, CFT reaffirms our support for creating new revenue sources to ensure we can recruit and retain staff to ensure every California student can reach their educational potential and goals. 

“While the Governor’s proposed budget focuses on reductions and other measures to stave off deeper impacts to the state’s budget, the proposal unfortunately lacks novel revenue concepts that can also help balance the budget. California is the 5th largest economy in the world, and our students and their families deserve a public school system that is fully and equitably funded in line with the economic stature of the state.”
