SUNOL, CA – Last week a majority of voters in Sunol cast ballots in support of students and successfully recalled Sunol Glen Unified School District School Board Trustees Ryan Jergensen and Linda Hurley. Trustees Jergensen and Hurley acted in an overtly partisan manner and governed in a way that silenced opposing voices and rejected basic tenets of democracy and transparency. They did not serve the best interests of the district’s students and the school community.

“Parents, local community members, and teachers came together as our Sunol Glen School Board veered away from their core mission of supporting our school and students. These concerned residents fought to return our school board to being one that is solely focused on our school and a world class education for our students. Our community won and, most importantly, our students won,” said Chris Wheeler, a teacher at Sunol Glen School and President of Sunol Federation of Teachers, AFT Local 1494.

“This is a win for students, parents, educators, and the community of Sunol,” said Jeff Freitas, President of CFT – A Union of Educators and Classified Professionals. “School board members are elected to serve the best interests of our schools and students, not to inject political gamesmanship into our classrooms. Voters in Sunol have shown that they want a school board that is focused on teaching and learning, not culture wars. This election was about ensuring safe and welcoming schools for all students, and the students won.”
