There are adjunct survival guides out there which give basic union info, and perhaps maybe where the copy machines are located on campus, then there’s The Part-Timer’s Almanac, A Compendium of Valuable Information, which is perhaps the most comprehensive, adjunct-oriented union publication published by a local union.
It has it all, from a quick explanation of basic academic freedom and worker rights, to union representation, salary and benefits, to things like campus mailboxes, office hours space, and more. As a result, The Part-Timer’s Alamanac, won a first place honor in the CFT Communications Awards this year. This helpful guide for Sacramento adjuncts, written and prepared by Los Rios part-time faculty, is a model for other local unions.
